As believers, faith is something that we are supposed to have. Faith is the cornerstone of this walk with Christ. Google’s definition of faith is as follows:
1.Complete trust or confidence in someone or something.
For a time, I struggled with my faith. I grappled with putting my confidence in an intangible being that words can’t describe. I found a lack of confidence in myself as well as this “God” that I wanted to believe in, and therefore felt completely hopeless. I spiraled into a depression, as my efforts to have faith and live right failed time and time again. My pastor began to teach on God’s grace and the true meaning of it, and I found a slight comfort in knowing that my actions and good deeds meant nothing, rather my faith in Christ is what truly contributed to my salvation. But, my “church high” eventually wore off and I found myself thinking; “But what if I don’t have any faith? I do believe God is real, but there are aspects of this word and His promises, that I just don’t know if I truly believe. He says victory is mine, but when I look at my life, I don’t see that. He says that I am a new creature, but I still want to do the same things, I’m still struggling with the same things. How am I supposed to make myself have faith if I don’t already?”
But how can you have complete trust or confidence in someone you even know?
Eventually, what I realized, was that I knew a lot about God, but I didn’t truly know HIM. Being a believer in Christ is about having a relationship with Him about truly getting to know Him and through spending time in His word coming to understand how you are supposed operate in this life and the part you are to play in His Kingdom. Jesus says in John 15:4-5 ” Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (ESV)
Abide synonyms: obey, follow, hold to, stick to, stand by
Let’s recap, shall we? Jesus is the vine. We are the branch. We, the branches, cannot produce fruit by ourselves unless we obey, follow, hold to, stick to and stand by Christ. With Christ we will bear A LOT of fruit. Let’s take a moment to check out the Fruits of the Spirit, shall we? I love how in Hebrew this translates to 'middot ha-lev' or the 'qualities of heart.' These qualities mark us as followers of our Savior, Yeshua.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-23
This verse is referring to the Holy Spirit, which is essentially God living within us, a receipt for our salvation, if you will. A holy helper, given to us by Christ. A quality of the spirit that lives within us is faithfulness.
So you see? Your faith doesn’t come from you, it comes from Christ who lives in you. He is always previous, anything we need he first provided for us. When you feel as if you have no faith, just remember that all the faith you will ever need was placed inside of you by the author of faith himself. And your faith is destined to waiver if you don’t spend time with, cling to and hold onto Him and His word. As you study the faithfulness of Jesus through the word and let it sink into your heart, the holy spirit commits to transform you into a faithful person. Finding your faith lies in the simplicity of removing “you” from the equation and looking to Christ, for apart from him, we can do nothing, not even have faith.
