Moment of truth: I’ve been holding onto a Trader Joe’s bag full of empty products for about a year now. I have gone back and forth, as I usually do, convincing myself that no one wants to read about empties. I even recorded the typical ‘empties’ YouTube video...the footage is sitting on my hard drive…waiting to be edited. It’s so easy to psyche yourself out about the things you really want to do.

I love empties blog posts and YouTube videos. Knowing what people actually like and what they used up is HELPFUL to me when purchasing products. I love a good review! Sometimes, I just stand in the aisle at Target and look up as many reviews and quick videos as I can find before I put an item in my basket. You especially need to have reviews on hand when shopping at Target, because it can be rather overwhelming in that place. Am I right or am I right?

So, without further procrastination; here are the products I’ve used up.

Chanel Chance has been a favorite of mine since I was in high school. I remember the first time I smelled it on Audrey Trammell, it was a cold and breezy winter morning. I caught a whiff of it as we got out of our cars, asked her what it was, got it for Christmas and I’ve been wearing it ever since. Well, until recently, when I hopped on the ‘non-toxic’ train. As beautiful as this perfume smells, like most high-end fragrances, it is filled with toxic chemicals. I’m trying to cut back on toxic things in my life, so I won’t be repurchasing but I love her and will miss her forever. Chanel, not Audrey lol, although I love her too.

Sheamoisture Argan Oil and Raw Shea Butter & Raw Shea Butter Lotions were no brainers for me for a couple of years. They were some of the first non-toxic products I ever used. They are both very moisturizing and I used them primarily in the Winter. I have several empty bottles of both and even have a couple in the travel size for my handbag and luggage. Unfortunately, I feel as though I’m just not getting enough product and when they start to get low, it becomes difficult to get the lotion out. A pump could be helpful. I may repurchase in the future, but I’ve moved on for the time being.

Dove Dry Spray is feeding my ‘miminal’ side. I don’t want to smell like perfume, I just want to smell fresh and clean. This is meant to be a deodorant but I used it more as a perfume. I’m embarrassed to say that this is a little contradictory to my previous statement about non-toxic items. This product is by no means non-toxic but I love the smell. I will say that I only spray it on my clothes, although, I more so walk into it when I have dark colors on because it can leave a residue, I’m on the hunt for a similar ‘clean smell’ without all the extra chemicals.

Nicole by O.P.I. Drying Drops are a must have in my life now. I’ve already repurchased. I will forever repurchase. If you are a person who does your own nails, you need these. Do yourself a favor and receive the freedom that is painting your nails at night before you go to bed and waking up imprint free! I went about a month without these before repurchasing and I just walked around with naked nails. It’s that serious.

Cantu Shea Butter Leave In Conditioning Hair Repair Cream is a staple for many women of color. If it’s not a staple in their hair care regimen it definitely served a purpose in their life, if only for a season. I use this as pre-poo to detangle my hair. I’m looking for something to replace it because, you guessed it, it’s filled with toxic chemicals. In the meantime, I’m saying a prayer and repurchasing.

SheaMoisture Manuka Honey and Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Hair Masque is what I purchased to replace the Cantu for my pre-poo. It’s not quite the same slip. It actually has no slip at all unless I add a significant amount of oil to it, which then leaves my hair feeling heavy. I believe it would be better purposed as a deep conditioner for some, although for me, it was still a no. I’m going to continue to explore my options. This also has an extremely strong smell that will linger for what seems like weeks.

TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Leave-In Spray is reliable, useful, an oldie but goodie, if you will. Not much to say. It’s a heat protectant, it works. Definitely toxic, suggestions are welcome.

Beyond the Zone Protein Cocktail Leave In Treatment is another oldie but goodie, something I’ve repurchased many times. This product leaves my hair with a healthy shine, bounce and body. Another toxic item, I won’t be repurchasing after I finish the bottle I have, particularly because it’s a leave-in. I also don’t know if it is absolutely necessary, I can and have achieved the same results with other products.

Skinceuticals Phyto Plus was a random find that my mom came across in Blue Mercury a couple of years ago. This product is great and pricey. The objective is to target discoloration, dark spots, and hyper-pigmentation. Because I am acne prone and scar easily, I need something like this in my skincare arsenal. If you are a person who gets one pimple every couple of months and it leaves a mark, this product is not for you. If you are looking to ‘lighten’ your skin, this product is not for you. My experience with this is that it brightens and evens your skin tone quite beautifully over time. So if you get multiple pimples at once or if you have a problem area on your face, this would be a great product for you. Although this product is available on Amazon, I've seen too many reviews about it not being the real thing, so I purchase mine from Blue Mercury, Dermstore or directly from the Skinceuticals site.

Elta MD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 is a product I was talked into buying after getting a chemical peel a couple of years ago. As I’m leaving, the woman who administered the peel says ‘do you have sunscreen to wear on your way home, hunny?’ I told her I didn’t and then she proceeded to, in so many words, inform me that my face would fall off if I didn’t put some sunscreen on and that is how I ended up with this product. In my draft of this blog post, I was going to mention how pricey it was but when I went to look it up so that I could provide a link, I realized that the med spa I got the peel at charges over twenty dollars more. It's actually pretty affordable. Mine lasted about a year and I will say that due to some other ingredients in it, my skin actually improved with use. It's not greasy, it didn't encourage extra oil production, it was great in both Winter and Summer. I'm using another, less toxic, sunscreen at the moment... *Kanye Shrug

Tabasco Green Jalepeno Pepper Sauce...listen to me now. You need this sauce, OK? I love sauces, regular tabasco, Texas Pete etc. But this sauce is one that I have to immediately replace when it runs out. It's really great on popcorn and pasta as well as chicken, rice and beans...the list goes on. This is a great alternative if you don't like spicy things. I do, but this isn't spicy. Just looking at the empty bottle is making me sad. Try it out and let me know if you like it.

What are some things you've run out of recently? What do you have to replace immediately? Let me know in the comments below.
